The Literacy of “Argumentative Discourse”

“As Americans we have no childhood, half-fabulous, legendry wealth, no misty cloud-enveloped background, unlike any other race, we were founded by the full-grown, modern, self-conscious men” (21). This is my best quote from all the readings I have done so far in this semester.

As I mentioned above, I like this quote because it gives me a historical background of America and Americans as multi diverse society with no definite root and this is evident in Van Wyck Brooks, a romantic nationalist argument, that America had no past and no way of creating a national culture. And because of this, I decided to give it a different title as “A Country without Childhood”. However, group of writers called the Federal Writers Project tried to re-define and re-discover America as it is depicted in the Portrait of America but, at the end of it all, it did not work out as they anticipated.

  2. Thanks. I am going to write a poem and an essay with this title. How about that?
