One of Mayor’s beliefs that I really love is what he referred to as “Normal method” which he wrote in the college catalogue “Do not make the students a mere passive recipient for the learning of others, but put him to thinking and telling his thoughts for himself” (128).

When I first came across Mayo’s philosophy and belief, I thought he was a military scholar. He is one of those that Gold depicts as an aggressive educator because of his methods of literacy acquisition. Classroom according to Mayor, is a “place that pupils learn to exercise their own powers and if the teacher usurps this, he is the meanest of tyrant- and- tyrant over human souls” (128 ). I love these two quotes because it tells me how much Mayor wanted people to acquire literacy even though at the end, there were so many criticisms against his militant method of learning. But, he strongly believes that children should be given the opportunity to learn by being active in class. He believes also that teachers should tax the brain of the learners learners by allowing them to think for themselves which I think is very good because people tend to remember what they think of what has been taught than teaching them everything.

Interesting, isn't it?
ReplyDeleteIt's actually Mayo, though, rather than MayoR. Our university's founder.
